11am • Tin Mountain Conservation Center – Jackson Field Station property.- Highlights include the summit of Tin Mountain, a tin mine on the property, and historic homestead, and a mountain pond. Tin Mountain’s naturalist will explain the historic use of the property, help identify plant species, and point out animal signs. These hikes are a great way to explore the lesser trod trails of the White Mountains and avoid the crowds. Participants of all ages welcome.

- Community Event: SMALL MAMMAL POPULATIONS in WHITE MOUNTAINS (Tin Mtn program)
7pm •Tin Mountain Nature Learning Ctr- Small mammal (rodent and shrew) populations throughout the White Mountains undergo significant changes in abundance from year to year. However, the factors that influence these population changes are not well understood. Josh Willems, PhD candidate at UNH, has been focusing his research on teasing out the effects of beech mast, forest structure, and climate on small mammal populations utilizing a 30-year dataset from the Bartlett Experimental Forest. Join us to learn more about his findings and what this tells us about the area’s small mammal population.

Join a naturalist from Squam Lakes Natural Science Center, along with two live animals up close to find out about various successful adaptations they use to cope with the stresses of winter. Visiting animals may include porcupine, Great Horned Owl, opossum, skunk, woodchuck, Eastern Screech Owl, turtles, or hawks. This program presented at no cost to the community and open to all with generous support from the Friends of Jackson Public Library.

10am – 1pm • Tin Mountain Nature Learning Ctr, Albany- Join Tin Mountain naturalists as we explore the newly created trail system on the Lori Jean Kinsey Arboretum and adjacent private Bald Hill lands at Tin Mountain Conservation Center in Albany. Moderate climbs, downhill descents, and sweeping switchbacks await us as we summit Bald Hill, explore hemlock stands, and enjoy unique views of surrounding peaks. Participants will need to provide their own ski setup (classic-style/touring) and trails are rated intermediate. Afterwards we will convene at a neighborhood brewpub for fun drinks and appetizers for those interested.

Outdoor highlights include animal tracks, sightings and a beaver pond, while inside the Nature Learning Center you will find animal mounts and a gem & mineral collection. Winter is the perfect season to see evidence of our year-round residents and enjoy our winter landscape. If you need snowshoes we have them in all sizes!

Melanie graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1990. She currently lives in Jackson, New Hampshire and is the owner of Jackson Art Studio & Gallery. Melanie is an award-winning artist who paints in a loose, impressionistic style with a brush or a palette knife. As a plein air painter, Levitt paints on location braving the elements to capture the mood of the scene. Her favorite subjects are the mountains, rivers and small farms of New Hampshire and the rugged coasts of Maine.
- Community Event: PREDATOR PREDICAMENT
7pm • Tin Mountain Nature Learning Center, Albany- New Hampshire’s predators include some of the most well-known, iconic mammal species in eastern North America. They range in size from tiny bats to massive moose and everything in between. At least half of our +/- 35 species of mammals in NH can be assigned to this group, and many have incredibly specific eating habits that play a tremendous role in balancing ecosystem dynamics. This program will cover the ecology of most of the well-known predators that range through our woods, fields, and back yards, and will discuss some of the threats to their existence. Some of the more common, wide-ranging species will be looked for during our field session on Saturday the 10th of February by virtue of their tracks, scat, and other sign.

- This is a “meet up” type of activity, no charge.
- Needed equipment: ski poles are better than trekking poles, but don’t let pole-specificity get in the way of joining. I wear my “second best running shoes,” not the best because it can be wet and muddy; but light hikers work, too. Plus the usual sun and tick repellents.

- Community Event:SKETCHING from SPECIMENS: Nature Drawing Class
9-11am Tin Mountain Nature Learning Center- Let’s explore what’s in the drawers! Turtle shells, skulls, insects, and more. Even mounted specimens can be accessed in this class. Drawing what we see in nature is one of the best ways to connect with nature. But what’s it like to see and feel an animal’s skull up close? Or a bird’s toes? This workshop, led by artist Sandy McDermott, is an opportunity to touch, feel, and hold some natural artifacts that we wouldn’t be able to handle, or shouldn’t, in an outdoor, live setting. This workshop is open to anyone with an interest in drawing and nature, no experience required.

12:30-2:45pm • JCC- Jackson Community Church invites you to participate in planning for the church’s long-term success. The first phase of our newly initiated ‘appreciative inquiry’ will include multiple forms of engagement: focus group meetings, a community survey, and several full community discovery and visioning sessions, facilitated by a professional consultant.
- We’ll ‘explore the best of what is’ in our church today, and then build from those strengths and emerging opportunities to imagine our future. The community planning activities of the coming few months will become the basis of our church’s long term strategic plan, we hope your voice will be included!
