Day 1 — Gratitude as Orientation

  • Scripture: Psalm 118:24 (NRSV): This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.
  • Reflection: Gratitude is not denial of suffering; it is a way of being oriented toward hope. Psychologists note that intentionally naming thanks reshapes neural pathways toward well-being. Furthermore, gratitude is not passive—it fuels compassion, justice, and courage.
Notice how scriptures throughout the Bible, across centuries, even in the most bleak of circumstances, remind us to lift up our thanks and shift our perspectives. Religions and mindfulness practices and wisdom traditions around the world echo this guidance.
  • Practice: List three things you are grateful for today—one ordinary, one surprising, and one difficult.

Song:

“I would maintain that thanks are the highest form of thought.” — G.K. Chesterton
