Dec 4 — Hope That Surprises Us

  • Scripture: Luke 1:30 –  “The angel said to Mary, ‘Don’t be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God.’”
  • Reflection: Divine favor appeared,  not to the powerful, but to an impoverished young woman in an occupied land. Hope arrives in unexpected places and unexpected people. Appearances cannot tell the whole story. Vulnerable people may be quite resilient. From different perspectives arise new ideas and positions of strength.
Mary’s voice, her song, her choices, are among a small number of deeds and words attributed to female characters in the Bible. That’s how impactful one person may be!
  • Practice: Look for God at the margins today. Where is holiness quietly stirring?
  • Song: “A Million Dreams” from The Greatest Showman: https://youtu.be/pSQk-4fddDI?si=U9_5XbNduDfV7Ges
  • “We must let go of the life we have planned, so as to accept the one that is waiting for us.” — Joseph Campbell
