Tuesday: Sharing a Meal or Communal Activity – Breaking Bread with Others

September 2

  • Scripture: Luke 22:19 “And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, ‘This is my body, given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.’”
  • Reflection: Sharing meals is a sacred act that fosters community. Connecting over food and drink builds bonds and nurtures spiritual unity. We relate in a whole different way, when we let down our guard to eat together.
For people who identify with the Christian tradition, an intentional approach to a meal also reminds us of Christ’s final meal with his followers and beloved friends. We are asked, any time we gather for a meal, to remember how holy Love was also broken open, like the bread, and poured out to be shared, like the cup. Be sure to pause and silently, or aloud, give thanks for the meal. It is a good mindfulness and gratitude practice to integrate into daily living.
How does being together for a meal support your wellbeing? In what ways is it a challenge? What are memorable moments you have shared around a table together? What did love, broken open and shared, look like in those times?
  • Spiritual Practice Prompt: Invite family, friends, or neighbors for a meal this week. Or accept someone else’s invitation to get together for anything from a cup of coffee to a meal. Pause to give thanks before the meal!
