Day 6 — Bread is Sacred

  • Scripture: Deuteronomy 8:10 You shall eat your fill and bless the Lord your God for the good land that he has given you.
  • Reflection: Every meal is a small Eucharist. Each sharing of food and drink is a re-enactment of the generosity, giving of self, and servitude embodied during the Last Supper and the events that preceded and followed it.
On a daily basis, gratitude for food reminds us of land, workers, and earth. Food insecurity is a justice crisis we are called to address. This is even more timely when millions of Americans are now facing a true shortage due to stoppage of our nation’s public safety net. Meanwhile, local food pantries and food banks are trying to bolster their response.
Gratitude calls on us to care, to share, to do something. Certainly pay attention to the heightened needs and requests from our local nonprofits, that are seeking support to help friends and neighbors in these times.
  • Practice: Meanwhile, take time to say a blessing over your food today—name where it came from, who made it possible. This is a simple, ancient spiritual practice that deserves to become habit in our lives.
