- Scripture: Matthew 13:24–30 – “The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field. But while everyone was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and went away.”
- Reflection: This parable models discernment—understanding what is beneficial and what is detrimental— in our spiritual, emotional, psychological and physical lives. Body, mind, and spirit are all tied together!
Consider where you find ‘weeds’ in your life. What steps you can take to discern and prioritize growth over what may hinder it?
Give space and time to activities and relationships that do not absolutely deplete you. Prioritize experiences and connections that help to renew you.
If you must give time to committed work, service, or other areas of life that are draining, balance those times with self-care and other ways of reinforcing your wellbeing. You cannot be present to causes, purposes, or people that need you, unless you are also caring for your own mental and physical health and fitness. - Spiritual Practice Prompt: Spend time considering influences, habits, or thoughts that might represent ‘weeds’ in your life. What changes can you make to focus more on your growth? What is one ‘weed’ that you could identify and address, perhaps by reducing its presence in your life? We can imagine so many things that steal away our attention … screen time on devices, spending money on something that doesn’t help you, or giving energy to activities that disrupt your presence in more meaningful places and relationships.

Although the life of a person is in a land full of thorns and weeds, there is always a space in which the good seed can grow. You have to trust God.— Pope Francis
