FRI, Sept 29

  • Community Event: NORDIC WALKING with Ellen Chandler
8am • Valley Cross Road Parking Lot, Jackson

    • Fridays – Intervals with poles (more like hill bounding) (Sept. 8, 15, 22, 29, Oct. 6, 13, 20, 27) –
    • Also takes place on Tuesdays @ 8am: Nordic WALKING – after a warm up we walk about 2 miles using poles and reconnecting at the top of major hills.
    • Fridays are Nordic Walking & Striding/”Moosehoofing” (a little faster) intervals. Even though the pace is a little faster for some, we use “time” as the measure, so everyone can reconnect on the way back down the hill.
    • Both of these activities are, in the end, self directed. It’s like yoga, “your practice is your practice,” but it’s more fun in a group.
    • Here is a video link (sorry for the various ads) that explains Nordic Walking and “Moosehoofing”.
    • This is a “meet up” type of activity, no charge.
    • Needed equipment: ski poles are better than trekking poles, but don’t let pole-specificity get in the way of joining.  I wear my “second best running shoes,” not the best because it can be wet and muddy; but light hikers work, too. Plus the usual sun and tick repellents.

Taking inspiration from Mahler’s Songs of the Wayfarer in the outstanding arrangement for baritone and chamber ensemble by Schoenberg, the ensemble has arranged other orchestral and vocal works by Mendelssohn, Schubert, and Mahler to tell the New England seafaring story. The musicians of Arpeggione will perform on instruments from the late 19th century, including Romantic Era flute, clarinet, harmonium, and even a handmade broom. Celebrated baritone David Kravitz joins Arpeggione to create a fascinating, humorous, and moving portrait of the rich maritime history of New England.
