May 18 Spring Devotional

Sunday, May 18

  • Scripture: Colossians 1:16 – “For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible.”
  • Reflection:  As we explore the world emerging around us, it is a holy text about the relationship between the seen and unseen. We experience the divine mystery of life in this season, as rebirth arises out of the small death and dormancy of winter, and the decay of the past nourishes the potential of the future.
Meanwhile, what is invisible or hidden, in the world, that we require? That touches or fills us? Certainly oxygen. Assuredly we require the blood within. We are dependent on the electrical currents that run through our bodies. Biochemistry helps us function. Our heartbeats are the promise of life.
What else is hidden, metaphorically, that we require? Love? Friendship? Forgiveness? Another emotional or spiritual state? Do you require biological or spiritual or emotional or psychological healing?
What do you offer to the world, which cannot be seen, yet has an impact?
  • Spiritual Practice Prompt: What evidence do you notice, today, that the world needs healing? How do you know this? Did you observe it or learn about it from others? How are you participating in the human responsibility to God as a steward of creation?

Song:

The Yakama practice reverence in their spring feast, giving thanks before they go to gather. The elders instruct us: take just what you need. Leave plenty for future generations. This implies that life is interdependent; what I do has a direct impact on the lives of other creatures. Living in ways that are consistent with this basic understanding results in abundance….
Creation did not occur in six days and then stop; it is an ongoing process. Reverence means demonstrating deep respect for the plants and animals required to sustain my life and the lives of my family members
… Reverence does not happen once per week; it is practiced each day faithfully, moment by moment. It is acknowledging that we are dependent on the systems of life, that they are not subordinate to us or to our will. — Sarah Augustine, full article: https://cac.org/daily-meditations/creations-revelation/
