May 17 Spring Devotional

Saturday, May 17

  • Scripture: John 15:5 – “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit.”
  • Reflection: Spring offers vivid examples of growth and abundance. The unseen, such as seeds that put out roots, become visible. Green emerges, seeking nutrients and desiring to propagate life.
The scriptures often use metaphors about connection to strong trees or healthy vines as an image for wellbeing, based on relationship to Godself. How does Godself become real to you? In what way does that connection express itself in your life?
And what other forms of growth are you noticing at this time? What conditions help you grow? What essential needs have been met in your life? What needs do you continue to experience? What circumstances would help you grow and connect more deeply?
Also notice that these metaphors of connection usually involve multiple generations of flourishing. Trees and vines can grow to become ancient. What legacy do you leave in this world? What are you planting or creating that will endure?
  • Spiritual Practice Prompt: How can you become more connected to Godself? Choose one way and put it into action this week: prayer, music, scripture reading and study, gardening, or immersing yourself in the natural world.

The true meaning of life is to plant trees, under whose shade you do not expect to sit. ― Nelson Henderson
