Friday: Learning, Studying & Exploring

September 5

  • Scripture: 2 Timothy 3:16-17 — “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”
  • Reflection: Diving into wisdom texts, including scripture from the Bible, expands our understanding and equips us for life’s journey. Learning about the Word about Godself fosters understanding and transforms our perspective. We become more wholly-human as we seek to follow the Way and to live as people of faith.
Again, wisdom inhabits the learning of people across many cultures and faith traditions. Wisdom texts are those writings and collected sayings of mentors and guides and thinkers and leaders from around the world. Echoes of similar ethical themes and philosophies may be found among every human community and across all continents.
Regardless of which wisdom texts and teachers you choose as your guides, take the opportunity to read, to listen, to learn from others. Grow spiritually. Feed your mind and soul.
Consider where you turn for insight and information. Who feeds you more than just facts, but also deeper truths? What teachers and guides help open up faith journey for you?
  • Spiritual Practice: Dedicate time to read and sit with a specific Biblical passage or wisdom saying today. Use the one above, for instance. Refer to commentaries, journal reflections, or online digital tools such as Bible Project to deepen your insights.

Song:

The cultivation and orientation of minds toward goodness, truth, and beauty is an archetypal supposition of Western intellectual thought, perhaps best exemplified by Plato’s enduring analogy of the cave … According to this metaphor, stages of enlightenment are reached as the intellect ascends from false knowledge to the knowledge of the good and just. — Daniel Moulin-Stoz
