March 31st Daily Devotional

LIVING, LEARNING & LOVING during LENT

Lenten devotionals for March and April. We will focus on a different concept each day of the week: Sundays: Resting/Taking Sabbath Mondays: Fasting Tuesdays: Giving Wednesdays: Serving Thursdays: Praying Fridays: Studying/Learning Saturdays: Celebrating/Playing.

March 31 (Monday – Fasting)

  • Scripture: Matthew 4:2 — He fasted for forty days and forty nights, and afterwards he was famished.
  • Reflection: Jesus fasted for forty days, preparing for His ministry. He tested himself. He disciplined himself. He learned from what he didn’t have, and what he was offered. He learned from denying temptations, from choosing what he needed over what he might have desired.
What do we learn from our hunger? What do we find out from our thirst and appetite for different forms of bodily, intellectual, emotional, or spiritual nourishment? Are our cravings healthy or out of balance? Do they offer us a form of centered-ness and connection, or do they disrupt and damage?
Listening to what we yearn to restore or replace, to sample or binge, teaches us something about ourselves. Fasting can strengthen our faith and focus our hearts.
  • Spiritual Practice Prompt: Consider fasting from a specific comfort or distraction this week to draw closer to God.
