Week 4 Theme: The Journey of the Heart

March 24 (Monday – Fasting)

  • Scripture: Nehemiah 1:4— When I heard these words I sat down and wept, and mourned for days, fasting and praying before the God of heaven.
  • Reflection: Fasting is sometimes, in ancient tradition and even in current times, used as a form of protest, resistance, or as an appeal for help from higher powers. It has been used by spiritual and cultural leaders such as Gandhi in India, or people in other cultures, to focus attention on issues of great socio-political impact. For individuals, it may be used as a practice to clear and focus the mind and body, preparing oneself to commune more closely with God, sometimes to seek healing or resolution of a problem.
  • Spiritual Practice Prompt: Fast — take a break — from something that distracts you today, and dedicate that time to being more mindful.

Song:

Fasting is the ultimate expression of the desire for God. – John Piper.
