DAILY DEVOTIONALS for JULY

Monday, July 21

  • Scripture: Psalm 62:1 “Truly my soul finds rest in God; my salvation comes from him.”
  • Reflection: Rest isn’t merely physical—it’s spiritual. When we quiet our minds and hearts in the presence of God, we are following one of the most ancient spiritual practices and commandments. Humans are designed for play and rest, as well as work and service and productivity.
We are, through rest, saved from our idea that we are the ‘boss of everything’. The hubris that we are Atlas, holding up the world. Resting spiritually, taking a breath, putting down our sense of responsibility for everything and everyone, and trusting that Holy Love holds us and all of creation, is the ultimate self-care. How far into that spiritual practice can you lean? Can you put it all down? Play? Breathe? Be?
  • Spiritual Practice Prompt: Spend time in play, rest and recreation today. In what way do you notice the reality of “my soul rests in God?” How does it translate into real life for you?

Song:

Rest is a fine medicine. Let your stomachs rest, ye dyspeptics; let your brain rest, you wearied and worried men of business; let your limbs rest, ye children of toil! — Thomas Carlyle

If we could learn how to balance rest against effort, calmness against strain, quiet against turmoil, we would assure ourselves of joy in living and psychological health for life. — Josephine Rathbone
