Daily Devotional

Cultivate steps for spiritual growth each day this week.

January 19: Positive Attitude in Adversity

  • Scripture: James 1:2-3 — My brothers and sisters, whenever you face various trials, consider it all joy, because you know that the testing of your faith produces endurance.
  • Reflection: We do not promote the idea that God intends to test or punish you. That’s not why ‘bad things happen to good people’. Or rather, bad things happen to all people. Even God’s love cannot prevent suffering in our lives. Such challenges will come, some due to our own choices, and some from circumstances beyond our control.
This scripture advocates a resilient approach to challenges and setbacks. One leadershio expert, Chris Goede, advises, ‘Adversity can serve as a catalyst to force you to adapt to change, overcome obstacles, lead by example, maintain focus, build trust, and manage stress. When you intentionally choose to face adversity with a growth mindset, resilience will develop.’ Trials and times of conflict, hardship, pain, and loss  become opportunities for growth;. Viewing tough times with a positive framework can reshape our experiences. How can you approach times of trial with a positive framework?
  • Prompt: When faced with challenges, consciously choose to seek ways to be grateful and positive. Find perspective. Push yourself to consider ways you may grow, even during or after difficult situations. Implement a regular gratitude practice, as a first step.
