Boston Post Cane awarded to Warren Schomaker

The Jackson selectmen awarded Warren Schomaker the Boston Post Cane at their meeting July 27, 2021. In 1909 the Boston Post, in a publicity effort, sent 700 gold-headed ebony canes to towns in MA, RI, ME, and NH to be given to the oldest resident of the town. Most of the canes have been lost over the years, however Jackson still has its original cane, which is stored in the Town Office. A replica cane is given to the recipient.

Warren Schomaker, aged 97, was born in Sydney, Australia, on January 27, 1924. His mother, Ivy Emma Hill, was from Braidwood, New South Wales, Australia. His father, George, was born in 1885 in a covered wagon travelling west from Chicago on the trail to Oregon. His birth was registered in Seattle, Washington.

Warren came to America in 1945 and secured his first job with Stromberg Carlson, a maker of telephone equipment, in Rochester, NY. While in Rochester, Warren and a partner formed Utility Services, Inc. in 1955 to acquire its first small telephone company in Melvin Village, NH. More acquisitions were made in Indiana, Illinois, Minnesota, Montana, and South Dakota. In 1960 Warren and 2 partners formed Continental Telephone Corporation, later renamed Contel. During the next 10 years, more than 110 acquisitions were made in 42 states, Barbados, Trinidad/Tobago, Jamaica, Grenada, Grand Bahama, Quebec, and Ontario. Contel went public in 1964.

In 1996, Warren and Leslie moved from Kennebunkport to Jackson. Having been president of the Kennebunkport Historical Society, Warren was interested in joining the Jackson Historical Society. Under his leadership, with the help of many, accomplishments of the Society have been numerous and have placed it in the enviable position it holds today. Just a few accomplishments include:

  • Getting 17 structures named to the National Register of Historic Places.
  • Staging a year-long bicentennial celebration
  • Helping the grammar school kids create a time capsule, which is stored at the Society
  • Erecting the Korean War monument
  • Creating the Memorial Walk to the Town Offices.
  • Restoring the old snow roller across from the Wentworth
  • Paying for the paving of the Old Town Hall (before the Society was using it) and purchasing the chairs now at the Whitney Center
  • Restoring the Town Hall – new roof, upstairs egress, new siding, new wiring, general renovations
  • Publishing numerous books of historic interest.
  • Making 19th century White Mountain Art a focus of the society, with lectures, exhibitions, and art sales, and creating the Museum of White Mountain Art upstairs in the Town Hall.
  • Commissioning a replica of the Town’s Boston Post Cane and having a case made for the original.

The stunning new library is a prime example of the Society working with other organizations and the entire community. The Society saved the timbers of the historic Trickey barn, which was scheduled to be demolished to make way for the Whitney Center, and stored them in trailers for a future use.  They were later donated to the Town for the library.  Building the library was a town-wide project with many people, young and old, involved. Once building plans were complete, Sam Harding was the general coordinator; Carrie Scribner mobilized the children; Michael Weeder was the master builder.

    Join Tin Mountain Conservation Center for weekly hikes at the Jackson Field Station property every Thursday in July & August. Highlights include the summit of Tin Mountain, a tin mine on the property, and historic homestead, and a mountain pond. Tin Mountain’s naturalist will explain the historic use of the property, help identify plant species, and point out animal signs. These hikes are a great way to explore the lesser trod trails of the White Mountains and avoid the crowds. Participants of all ages welcome.

which our faith community supports through giving or volunteering:

  • Heifer International cards are available inside the church’s front entrance. You may take a card and make a donation (cash or check). Drop it in the wonderful church model made by Sandy Louis’ dad, which we’re using to collect these funds. Learn moreabout Heifer International.
  • Zimbabwe cards are available in the front of the church. These support partner faith communities and communal projects through the NH-Zimbabwe Ukama Partnership, including sister churches like JCC’s partner: Chikanga Church, City of Mutare, Zimbabwe. Representatives from regions — including our churches — have traveled back and forth to establish strong ties between the partner faith communities.

    This event will be held  outdoors @ Bedford Presbyterian Church, Bedford, NH
    and on Zoom.“Mourn with those who mourn” (Romans 12:15). Mourning Into Unity is a response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the unvoiced grief so many of us feel. The pandemic has laid bare cruel fissures in our society. So much loss is being endured: loss of life, loss of jobs, loss of health insurance, loss of safe schools. When we grieve as one, we reject efforts to use the ravages of this disease and its cruel and disproportionate impacts on the most vulnerable to divide us.Churches, synagogues, and mosques across the country will be hosting two candlelight vigils outside their houses of worship (HOW) on two successive Mondays: October 12th and 19th.These vigils will bring us together as a nation to mourn our devastating losses and declare our unity as Americans and people of faith. When we see our shared humanity, we strengthen our commitment to each other and our democracy.

    Registration required: call 603-447-6991. Highlights include the summit of Tin Mountain, a tin mine on the property, and historic homestead, and a mountain pond. Tin Mountain’s naturalist will explain the historic use of the property, help identify plant species, and point out animal signs. These hikes are a great way to explore the lesser trod trails of the White Mountains and avoid the crowds. Participants of all ages a welcome. Reservations required – please call by the Wednesday prior at noon. Limited to 10 participants. Program fee of $5/person or $20/family; members free.           Additional info about Marjorie Agosin: poet, human rights activist, and literary critic. Marjorie Agosin is Professor of Spanish,  at Wellesley College. Her diverse writing and teaching focuses on Jewish literature, women’s rights and human rights in Latin America,  as well as migration, identity and ethnicity. Professor Agosin’s accomplishments are many — deeply tied to her love of her adopted home: Chile,  and her commitment to social justice. The United Nations has honored Agosin for her work on human rights. The Chilean government awarded her with the Gabriela Mistral Medal of Honor for Life Achievement in 2000.  And in the United States, she has received the Letras de Oro, the Latino Literary Prize, and the Peabody Award, together with the United Nations Leadership Award in Human Rights.     Rev Gail facilitates the gathering. From Judy’s Family: “We would like you to join us for a beautiful memorial service planned for Judy. It will be held at the Glen Cemetary in Glen, NH. This will be a casual, socially distanced, outdoor service, in order to accommodate all those who would like to attend.  We would like an RSVP and also ask that everyone be considerate and please wear a mask.” They write: “About Judy… Judy was born on April 2, 1936 to Roger A. and Isabel M. Griffin, in Boston, MA. She was the first born of the 6 Griffin children, who’s births spanned 18 years. Being the oldest, Judy was relied upon to help care for her younger siblings, and as the only girl in the first 4, she quickly learned be very resourceful. Her Life… After graduating from college, she met and married the love of her life, in a ski club in Glen, NH. Together, Judy and Carl raised a family that she was most proud of, ran a successful small retail business, and she generously gave her time and energy to many organizations including Cranmore Mountain, the garden club, and the Meister Cup Race. Upon retiring to NH full time, Judy enjoyed their social life, playing golf with the ladies, and skiing with “the gang”. Together, Carl and Judy traveled all over the US and the World to visit with their many friends and family.  They enjoyed life on their many trips to fish at Jones Pond, and the chores of daily retirement life, like making homemade maple syrup. Judy will be dearly missed by her family, close friends, and the many people that came to know her.”

    We will use only designated open pews only (2 out of 3 pews are roped off). Families (and quaran-team groups who have already been in close proximity) may sit together. We will avoid passing of peace, handshaking, hugs, etc. We also ask that you use hand sanitizer as you enter and wear your own mask throughout service. Worship will be streamlined with scripture, prayer and live music by Alan Labrie (if he’s able to arrive while worship is in session): no congregational singing. When worship ends, participants are asked to leave the church with social distance between each group;  we will immediately be preparing for the next zoom-based 10:30am worship service. If you have any signs of illness such as fever, cough, congestion, stomach upset, you are courteously asked to remain home and take care of yourself.
