    • Hosting Ben Kilham of the Kilham Bear Center located in Lyme.
    • The Kilham Bear Center has been rehabilitating and releasing injured, orphaned and abandoned black bear cubs since 1993.  For more information follow this link https://kilhambearcenter.org/. 
    • This event may take place in the Josiah Bartlett Elementary School cafeteria to take advantage of the additional space.
    • Coordinated to complement the One Book One Valley read of The Bear. The grand finale of this community wide read event takes place on Thursday, NOVEMBER 2nd at the Majestic Theatre in Conway when the author Andrew Krivak will talk about the book and answer readers questions.  All events will take place at 7:00 pm and multiple copies of the book are available in the library.

  • Community Event:EXPLORING MICROPLASTICS in OSSIPEE WATERSHED
    7pm Tin Mtn Nature Learning Center

    • Jill Emerson, staff scientist at Green Mountain Conservation Group, will talk about how two global issues – climate change and plastic waste – affect us right here in NH.  She will go over the potential impacts of this past summer’s flooding, and what proactive steps we can all take to better prepare for future flooding events.  In addition, she will touch upon GMCG’s new freshwater microplastics survey program using Nile Red staining and discuss how her group is bringing education about this problem to students across the Ossipee watershed.

    • This is a “meet up” type of activity, no charge.
    • Needed equipment: ski poles are better than trekking poles, but don’t let pole-specificity get in the way of joining.  I wear my “second best running shoes,” not the best because it can be wet and muddy; but light hikers work, too. Plus the usual sun and tick repellents.

      • The Jackson Historical Society is holding its 21st annual White Mountain Art Sale. There are currently over 50 items from private collectors, primarily 19thcentury paintings.   • Community Event: FALL FULL MOON WALK (Tin Mtn program)

    • Join the staff of Tin Mountain Conservation Center for an evening walk through the beautiful fields and forests of the north country. October’s full moon, the hunter’s moon, will provide ample light for an evening exploration. We will listen for whooo’s out there and explore the autumn night sky.

    • Join us for a slow-paced walk that takes a closer look at the world around us and explores the Tin Mountain Conservation trails in Albany, NH. Outdoor highlights include an 1800s quarry, beaver pond and resident flora & fauna, while inside the Nature Learning Center you will find animal mounts and a gem & mineral collection. These leisurely investigations of the trails, and tour of the Learning Center are perfect for all ages; you are never too young or too old to have a new adventure

  • Community Event: NORDIC WALKING with Ellen Chandler
    8am • Valley Cross Road Parking Lot, Jackson

    • Fridays – Intervals with poles (more like hill bounding (Oct. 13, 20, 27) –
    • Also takes place on Tuesdays @ 8am: Nordic WALKING – after a warm up we walk about 2 miles using poles and reconnecting at the top of major hills.
    • Fridays are Nordic Walking & Striding/”Moosehoofing” (a little faster) intervals. Even though the pace is a little faster for some, we use “time” as the measure, so everyone can reconnect on the way back down the hill.
    • Both of these activities are, in the end, self directed. It’s like yoga, “your practice is your practice,” but it’s more fun in a group.

    • Squam Lakes Natural Science Center will be presenting Creatures of the Night, a live animal program at Jackson Public Library Meet real creatures of the night in this up close look at animal nightlife
    • How do wild animals find food or escape predators in the dark of the night? Attendees won’t have to stay up late to get a close look at elusive nocturnal creatures in this live animal presentation.
    • A naturalist f introduces attendees to three live creatures of the night to learn how adaptations make these surprising animals well suited for life at night. Featured animal ambassadors may include one of New Hampshire’s very own owl species, a bat, an opossum, or a skunk.

    • Opera on Tap is an international organization with grassroots chapters that seeks to bring the art form of Opera and vocal music to audiences in non-traditional settings.
