August 12 Daily Devotional

Tuesday, August 12

  • Scripture: 1 Timothy 6:17“Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.”
  • Reflection: Once more we pause and take stock of the gifts in our lives. Where do you experience a sense of balance, abundance, calm, confidence, hope, compassion, or delight, especially in these times? The spiritual practice of resisting despair and anxiety includes noticing what is positive. Being mindful and appreciative of these aspects of our lives helps us find perspective.
This scripture also focuses us on things we cannot obtain. Experiences and encounters that are beyond purchase. We are asked to pay attention to natural and spontaneous moments, sights, or events that occur in the world around us.
The scripture above reminds us that the resources and relationships we need, the goodness we experience, come from God. Today, let’s focus on delighting in simple pleasures and experiences, valuing them as blessings beyond material wealth.
  • Spiritual Practice Prompt: Identify and relish one simple, non-material pleasure today, such as a someone’s smile or a the way the light breaks through the clouds. If you’re with others, ask people to share one thing they noticed that gives each of you comfort and pleasure.
