Day 26 — Gratitude for Science and Knowledge

  • Scripture: Daniel 12:4 — Many shall be running back and forth, and knowledge shall increase.
  • Reflection: This week we’re preparing for a holiday meal. Either we’ll eat together, or we’ll make and serve the food others  enjoy.
Even in our cooking and baking, we hand down knowledge and science in our recipes. Chemistry, math, history, and natural science comprise some of the wisdom that blends together in delicious, effective, and safe preparation of foods to be eaten. Art also enters the traditions of our families, through storytelling, pictures, and creative expression with flavors, settings, displays, decorations, activities, games, colors and scents.
Let us give thanks for wisdom, exploration, and curiosity. And appreciate the human capacity to wonder and experiment and learn and fail and try again. Such persistence and inquisitiveness lead to other life-saving and frontier-expanding possibilities. We acknowledge the contributions that science, medicine, research, and technology contribute to our lives and our world. Yet we are also called to balance what is possible with what is ethical.
Our continued curiosity and learning honors God’s gift of reason and inquisitiveness and creativity. We are endowed with these capabilities, so that we may use them. And God’s revelation continues to unfold through our ongoing discoveries. The Holy Spirit accompanies us, guiding and informing how and why we use these gifts and what they illuminate along the way.
  • Practice: Savor a recipe today. Or read a science article and give thanks for human curiosity and intellect.
