October 27: Surrendering to God’s Bespoke Plan
- Scripture: Proverbs 16:9 — The human mind plans the way, but the Lord directs the steps.
- Reflection: We are invited to welcome God’s bespoke, personalized plan for our lives. To surrender and trust. To become partners and co-creators in God’s purpose for us.
We have explored ways to understand our own purpose in other devotionals. Today we focus on turning to God to submit to the Way and how it may shape our lives.
Consider this prayer by Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, that confesses the ways we struggle to maintain control and place obstacles between us and Holy Love. His prayer then requests God’s help to seek our higher vision and purpose.
Rev Dr. King prayed, “Most gracious and all wise God, before whose face the generations rise and fall; Thou in whom we live, and move, and have our being…We realize that we stand surrounded with the mountains of love and we deliberately dwell in the valley of hate. We stand amid the forces of truth and deliberately lie. We are forever offered the high road and yet we choose to travel the low road. For these sins O God forgive. Break the spell of that which blinds our minds. Purify our hearts that we may see thee. O God in these turbulent days when fear and doubt are mounting high, give us broad visions, penetrating eyes, and power of endurance. Help us to work with renewed vigor for a warless world, for a better distribution of wealth, and for a brotherhood that transcends race or color. In the name and spirit of Jesus we pray. Amen.” - Spiritual Practice: Pray specifically, surrendering your plans to God and asking for alignment with divine purpose.

God’s plan is like a beautiful tapestry. And the tragedy of being human is that we only get to see it from the back. With all the ragged threads and the muddy colors. And we only get a hint at the true beauty that would be revealed if we could see the whole pattern on the other side…as God does.” — Matt Murdocks
