October 3: Navigating Uncertainty with Faith

  • Scriptural: Proverbs 3:5-6 “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”
  • Reflection: Uncertainty tests our trust, but it also deepens our openness to divine guidance. We aren’t being asked to turn off our brains. Remember that we are designed to use our intellect, to cultivate curiosity, to ask questions, and to be critical thinkers. Yet we are also relational, and some of our understanding comes from how others support and guide us along the way. That includes the Spirit, and how the Spirit places helpers and guides in our path. And how the Spirit prompts our own inner being to attune to God’s Way.
Yet faith also invites us to surrender what we cannot control and embrace God’s promise of direction and clarity amid ambiguity. How do you handle the tension of wanting to understand things, or know the ultimate outcome of an experience, and living inside the ‘limbo’ of ‘not knowing’? Isn’t so much of life filled with this ‘between’ phase of being, when we’re not sure, and we have so many questions, and doubts, and wonderings, and skepticisms? And we wish we had absolute clarity, yet that’s not how the world works?
  • Spiritual Practice: What do you need to surrender, when it comes to wanting to control everything, or know all the answers? Name your uncertainties and offer them to God.
