August 24 Daily Devotional

Sunday, August 24

  • Scripture: Luke 6:21“Blessed are you who hunger now, for you will be satisfied. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh.”
  • Reflection: The scripture repeatedly addresses the balance between human suffering and human resilience. Between what we lack and what we are given.
Jesus’ words promise balance. Godself never promises that we will avoid suffering, only that love will abide with us, endure with us, and accompany us through all of it. And that love will offer strength, hope, healing and resilience in the face of our loss and pain and conflict and anger.
When have you felt anothers’ comforting presence? When have you offered comfort to others?
  • Spiritual Practice Prompt: Write a letter to God expressing your pain, and then naming your hopes and dreams.

Song:

“Even a happy life cannot be without a measure of darkness, and the word happy would lose its meaning if it were not balanced by sadness.” ― Carl Jung
