- Scripture: Isaiah 12:6 – “Shout aloud and sing for joy, people of Zion, for great is the Holy One of Israel among you.”
- Reflection: Communities are often vibrant spaces of collective joy and praise. Today, consider how sharing pleasure within your community—friends, family, or neighbors—enhances the collective experience of delight.
Particularly, this passage focuses on the power of music within community. Have you had a chance to enjoy music this summer? Concerts? Instrumental works? Vocal performances? Bands? Musical theater?
If not such a musically-focused experience, have you found other ways to connect socially? Many summer events continue for the next few weeks. For instance, you can go to next weekend’s yard sale. Plan to participate in the upcoming Alzheimers walk or choose another fundraising experience that also provides you with time and focus on relationships. Alternately, choose a creative class, or take a sports or skills-based lesson, or join a community discussion group, or participate in a book group. Eat a meal or attend worship. Participate in something already planned by others or organize an outing you would like.
How does this commonly-shared experience differ from activities enjoyed in solitude? We are designed as relational beings, with mirror neurons in our brains. Relationships strengthen and deepen our capacity to experience and inspire joy. All such expressions of delight, praise, and gratitude reflect God’s intent to share such experiences with humanity. - Spiritual Practice Prompt: Engage in a community activity, and savor the chance to share support and connection. If possible, make it a chance to attend or participate in a musical experience or event. If not, choose another way of being with community in ways that reinforce pleasure and appreciation for you.
