August 3 Daily Devotional

Sunday, August 3

  • Scripture: Proverbs 17:22 – “A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.”
  • Reflection: Today is the Sabbath, and among the labors you are invited to set down, one of them is work, worry, and anxiety. Today is for respite, for refreshing, for renewing.
Laughter, cheer, and positive emotions are powerful healers and builders of resilience and strength. The wisdom of Proverbs teaches us that playfulness can be an effective antidote to life’s stresses, rejuvenating our spirit and connecting us with others. Embrace activities that cultivate cheerfulness today, seeing them as vital to both physical and spiritual well-being.
Consider this exchange recorded by Anne Frank as she hid with her family and other household members from the Nazis in Amsterdam:
“But you’re always a help to me!” he said.
    “How?” I asked, greatly surprised.
    “By being cheerful.”

Spiritual Practice Prompt: Name your burdens through prayer. Set them down, place them in Love’s keeping, and clear away spiritual and emotional space for joy and delight. Incorporate an activity that brings you lightness of heart into your Sabbath practice, today or whichever day of the week you take as Sabbath. Be renewed.
Focus on this prayer by St. Augustine, if you need some guidance: O Holy Spirit, descend plentifully into my heart. Enlighten the dark corners of this neglected dwelling and scatter there Thy cheerful beams.

Song:

I am determined to be cheerful and happy in whatever situation I may find myself. For I have learned that the greater part of our misery or unhappiness is determined not by our circumstance but by our disposition. — Martha Washington

A cheerful frame of mind, reinforced by relaxation… is the medicine that puts all ghosts of fear on the run. — George Matthew Adams

Hope is the power of being cheerful in circumstances that we know to be desperate. ― G.K. Chesterton

The people that humanity needs most are those who manage to be cheerful even on a frightening dark street, because high morale is the best form of struggle against darkness! ― Mehmet Murat ildan
