LIGHT
Daily Devotional
Cultivate the light within you each day this week.

January 9:  Light of Christ

  • ScripturJohn 8:12 — I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness.
  • Reflection: Contemplate Jesus as the light that brings hope and guidance. As people who study his life and follow his ministry, we are called to walk in Jesus’ Way.
Consider, in your life, the ways you have followed Jesus’ example. In what ways do you see similarities? Do you enjoy sitting down for meals with friends? Studying scripture? Feeding others? Helping to heal others? Quenching their thirst? Supporting people to become socially connected? Walking outside in nature and the world, learning from creation? Spending time on or near the water? Spending time in the mountains? Spending time in towns and cities, or in holy places? Setting time aside to withdraw and be quiet? Praying? Retreating to the garden? Going into unknown places and challenging the status quo? Choosing relationships with people who are outsiders in their own community? Building deep, long-lasting friendships? Are you in danger from authorities? Is your life at risk? Have you dedicated your entire life to service? Do you consider some aspect of your life to be a sacrifice? Do you help other people grow spiritually, emotionally, psychologically, physically, or socially? Do you share what you have with others, traveling lightly, giving away what you don’t need? Do you take time to notice people who might otherwise go unrecognized or unseen? Do you tell stories in some way? Do you sing? Offer prayers or blessings? Teach?
In what ways do you see contrasts? How does your life differ from Christ’s? What about the way Jesus lived makes you most uncomfortable? Is there anything there that you should pay attention to?
If you could align one thing in your life more closely to the example of the Way Jesus lived and worked in the world, what would it be?
  • Spiritual Discipline: Consider one area in your life for which you seek illumination, guidance, or healing. Sit quietly, in some form of sunlight or lamplight, and listen to what stillness and light may offer to you about this question you ask. Let the life of Christ be illumination that shines light on your question.
