Inspired by recent ski races, upcoming Olympic games, and today’s Superbowl Sunday, we discussed how we might pray during competitions or periods of conflict, stress, and struggle. We discussed forms of prayer or reflection that might center us at these times:
- For Preparation (becoming focused and ready to engage in the experience)
- For Support (intercession for comfort, strength, gifts and resources to go through the game, the contest, the stressful or conflicted situation)
- For Others (teammates, competitors/opponents, allies/friends, families/fans, coaches/teachers/mentors, colleages, etc)
- For Gratitude (thankfulness in the midst of challenge)
People sat at tables during brunch church, picked a scripture from among the collection of Bible passages in baskets at the table, and discussed their selected passage’s potential as a resource for prayer or reflection. People discussed how they might categorize the text among the four possible prayer opportunities above (prayers for preparation, for support, for others, for gratitude).
Here are the scriptures below. They were selected based on themes of athletes and contests, strength or vigor, images of body, gifts and blessings, victory and triumph, weakness or loss, and other such key ideas that might intersect with times of competition and challenge, conflict and struggle.

2 Timothy 2: 2,5,7. You then, my child, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus; 2 and what you have heard from me through many witnesses entrust to faithful people who will be able to teach others as well. 5 And in the case of an athlete, no one is crowned without competing according to the rules. 7 Think over what I say, for the Lord will give you understanding in all things.
4 Maccabees 6: 10-11. 10 Like a noble athlete the old man, while being beaten, was victorious over his torturers; 11 in fact, with his face bathed in sweat, and gasping heavily for breath, he amazed even his torturers by his courageous spirit.
4 Maccabees 17:14-16. 14 The tyrant was the antagonist, and the world and the human race were the spectators. 15 Reverence for God was victor and gave the crown to its own athletes. 16 Who did not admire the athletes of the divine legislation? Who were not amazed?
Ecclesiastes 9:11. 11 Again I saw that under the sun the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor bread to the wise, nor riches to the intelligent, nor favor to the skillful; but time and chance happen to them all.
Job 9: 25-26. My days are swifter than a runner; they flee away, they see no good. 26 They go by like skiffs of reed, like an eagle swooping on the prey.
1 Corinthians 9:23-25. 23 I do it all for the sake of the gospel, so that I may share in its blessings. 24 Do you not know that in a race the runners all compete, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win it. 25 Athletes exercise self-control in all things; they do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable one.
2 Timothy 4: 7-8. 7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 From now on there is reserved for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will give me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have longed for his appearing.
Numbers 18:29. Out of all the gifts to you, you shall set apart every offering due to the Lord; the best of all of them is the part to be consecrated.
Psalm 147:9-11. 9 He gives to the animals their food, and to the young ravens when they cry. 10 His delight is not in the strength of the horse, nor his pleasure in the speed of a runner; 11 but the Lord takes pleasure in those who fear him, in those who hope in his steadfast love.
Job 9: 19. If it is a contest of strength, he is the strong one! If it is a matter of justice, who can summon him?
Wisdom 4:2. [wisdom] 2 When it is present, people imitate it, and they long for it when it has gone; throughout all time it marches, crowned in triumph, victor in the contest for prizes that are undefiled.
4 Maccabees 15: 28-30. 28 But as the daughter of God-fearing Abraham she remembered his fortitude. 29 O mother of the nation, vindicator of the law and champion of religion, who carried away the prize of the contest in your heart! 30 O more noble than males in steadfastness, and more courageous than men in endurance!
4 Maccabees 17: 11-12. 11 Truly the contest in which they were engaged was divine, 12 for on that day virtue gave the awards and tested them for their endurance. The prize was immortality in endless life.
Wisdom 10: 12. 12 She protected him from his enemies, and kept him safe from those who lay in wait for him; in his arduous contest she gave him the victory, so that he might learn that godliness is more powerful than anything else.
1 Corinthians 14:12. So with yourselves; since you are eager for spiritual gifts, strive to excel in them for building up the church.
Hebrews 12:24-26, 29-30. 24 Jacob was left alone; and a man wrestled with him until daybreak. 25 When the man saw that he did not prevail against Jacob, he struck him on the hip socket; and Jacob’s hip was put out of joint as he wrestled with him. 26 Then he said, “Let me go, for the day is breaking.” But Jacob said, “I will not let you go, unless you bless me.” 29 Then Jacob asked him, “Please tell me your name.” But he said, “Why is it that you ask my name?” And there he blessed him. 30 So Jacob called the place Peniel, saying, “For I have seen God face to face, and yet my life is preserved.”
Matthew 6:33. But strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
Luke 12:31. Instead, strive for his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well.
1 Corinthians 12:31. But strive for the greater gifts. And I will show you a still more excellent way.
2 Peter 3:14-15. Therefore, beloved, while you are waiting for these things, strive to be found by him at peace, without spot or blemish, 15 and regard the patience of our Lord as salvation.
1 Corinthians 9:25-27. 25 Athletes exercise self-control in all things; they do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable one. 26 So I do not run aimlessly, nor do I box as though beating the air; 27 but I punish my body and enslave it, so that after proclaiming to others I myself should not be disqualified.
2 Timothy 3:10. Now you have observed my teaching, my conduct, my aim in life, my faith, my patience, my love, my steadfastness.
Exodus 32:18. But he said, “It is not the sound made by victors, or the sound made by losers; it is the sound of revelers that I hear.”
Mark 9:41. For truly I tell you, whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because you bear the name of Christ will by no means lose the reward.

1 Chronicles 29:11. Yours, O Lord, are the greatness, the power, the glory, the victory, and the majesty; for all that is in the heavens and on the earth is yours; yours is the kingdom, O Lord, and you are exalted as head above all.
Job 40:14. Then I will also acknowledge to you that your own right hand can give you victory.
Psalm 18:1. I love you, O Lord, my strength.
Psalm 20:1. The Lord answer you in the day of trouble! The name of the God of Jacob protect you!
Ephesians 6:12. For our struggle is not against enemies of blood and flesh, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.
Philippians 4:3. Yes, and I ask you also, my loyal companion, help these women, for they have struggled beside me in the work of the gospel.
Colossians 1:29. For this I toil and struggle with all the energy that he powerfully inspires within me.
1 Timothy 4:10. For to this end we toil and struggle, because we have our hope set on the living God, who is the Savior of all people, especially of those who believe.
Hebrews 10:32. But recall those earlier days when, after you had been enlightened, you endured a hard struggle with sufferings.
2 Esdras 12:47. for the Most High has you in remembrance, and the Mighty One has not forgotten you in your struggle.
Psalm 27:1. The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?
James 2:13. For judgment will be without mercy to anyone who has shown no mercy; mercy triumphs over judgment.
Isaiah 45:25. In the Lord all the offspring of Israel shall triumph and glory.
2 Corinthians 2:14. But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads in every place the fragrance that comes from knowing him.
Psalm 76:11. Make vows to the Lord your God, and perform them; let all who are around him bring gifts to the one who is awesome.
Romans 12:6a. We have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us.
1 Corinthians 2:12. Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit that is from God, so that we may understand the gifts bestowed on us by God.

Psalm 19:4-6. In the heavens he has set a tent for the sun, 5 which comes out like a bridegroom from his wedding canopy, and like a strong man runs its course with joy.6 Its rising is from the end of the heavens, and its circuit to the end of them; and nothing is hid from its heat.
Psalm 30:7. By your favor, O Lord, you had established me as a strong mountain.
Psalm 71:7. I have been like a portent to many, but you are my strong refuge.
Psalm 80:17. But let your hand be upon the one at your right hand, the one whom you made strong for yourself.
Psalm 89:13. You have a mighty arm; strong is your hand, high your right hand.
Psalm 136:12. With a strong hand and an outstretched arm, for his steadfast love endures forever.
Proverbs 31:17. She girds herself with strength, and makes her arms strong.
Proverbs 24:5. Wise warriors are mightier than strong ones, and those who have knowledge than those who have strength.
Song of Solomon 8:6. Set me as a seal upon your heart, as a seal upon your arm; for love is strong as death, passion fierce as the grave. Its flashes are flashes of fire, a raging flame.
Isaiah 58:11. The Lord will guide you continually, and satisfy your needs in parched places, and make your bones strong; and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water, whose waters never fail.
Zechariah 10:12. I will make them strong in the Lord, and they shall walk in his name, says the Lord.
Luke 2:40. The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon him.
Acts 3:7. And he took him by the right hand and raised him up; and immediately his feet and ankles were made strong.
Acts 3:16. And by faith in his name, his name itself has made this man strong, whom you see and know; and the faith that is through Jesus has given him this perfect health in the presence of all of you.
1 Corinthians 1:25. For God’s foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and God’s weakness is stronger than human strength.
1 Corinthians 16:13. Keep alert, stand firm in your faith, be courageous, be strong.
2 Corinthians 12:10. Therefore I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities for the sake of Christ; for whenever I am weak, then I am strong.
Ephesians 6:10. Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his power.
Colossians 1:11. May you be made strong with all the strength that comes from his glorious power, and may you be prepared to endure everything with patience, while joyfully giving thanks to the Father, who has enabled you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the light.

3 John 1:2. Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, just as it is well with your soul.
Tobit 5:16. “I will go with him; so do not fear. We shall leave in good health and return to you in good health, because the way is safe.”
Wisdom 7:10-11a. 10 I loved her more than health and beauty, and I chose to have her rather than light, because her radiance never ceases. 11 All good things came to me along with her.
Sirach 30:16. There is no wealth better than health of body, and no gladness above joy of heart.
Sirach 34:20. He lifts up the soul and makes the eyes sparkle; he gives health and life and blessing.
Joshua 1:9. I hereby command you: Be strong and courageous; do not be frightened or dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.
2 Samuel 10:12. Be strong, and let us be courageous for the sake of our people, and for the cities of our God; and may the Lord do what seems good to him.

4 Maccabees 1:18. Now the kinds of wisdom are rational judgment, justice, courage, and self-control.
4 Maccabees 5:22-24 22 You scoff at our philosophy as though living by it were irrational, 23 but it teaches us self-control, so that we master all pleasures and desires, and it also trains us in courage, so that we endure any suffering willingly; 24 it instructs us in justice, so that in all our dealings we act impartially, and it teaches us piety, so that with proper reverence we worship the only living God.
4 Maccabees 17:4. Take courage, therefore, O holy-minded mother, maintaining firm an enduring hope in God.

2 Corinthians 4:15. Yes, everything is for your sake, so that grace, as it extends to more and more people, may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God.
Ephesians 3:16. I pray that, according to the riches of his glory, he may grant that you may be strengthened in your inner being with power through his Spirit.
Philippians 4:19. And my God will fully satisfy every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.
1 Thessalonians 2:12. … urging and encouraging you and pleading that you lead a life worthy of God, who calls you into his own kingdom and glory.
1 Peter 1:23-25. 23 You have been born anew, not of perishable but of imperishable seed, through the living and enduring word of God. 24 For “All flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls, 25 but the word of the Lord endures forever.”
1 Peter 5:10. And after you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, support, strengthen, and establish you.
Wisdom 7:25. For she is a breath of the power of God, and a pure emanation of the glory of the Almighty; therefore nothing defiled gains entrance into her.

1 Corinthians 12:21-23. 21 The eye cannot say to the hand, “I have no need of you,” nor again the head to the feet, “I have no need of you.” 22 On the contrary, the members of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, 23 and those members of the body that we think less honorable we clothe with greater honor, and our less respectable members are treated with greater respect.
2 Corinthians 11:29-30. 29 Who is weak, and I am not weak? Who is made to stumble, and I am not indignant?30 If I must boast, I will boast of the things that show my weakness.
2 Corinthians 12:9. But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness.” So, I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me.
2 Corinthians 13:3-4 3 Since you desire proof that Christ is speaking in me. He is not weak in dealing with you, but is powerful in you.
Hebrews 12:12. Therefore lift your drooping hands and strengthen your weak knees.
Judith 9:11 For your strength does not depend on numbers, nor your might on the powerful. But you are the God of the lowly, helper of the oppressed, upholder of the weak, protector of the forsaken, savior of those without hope.
2 Esdras 2:20-22. 20 “Guard the rights of the widow, secure justice for the ward, give to the needy, defend the orphan, clothe the naked, 21 care for the injured and the weak, do not ridicule the lame, protect the maimed, and let the blind have a vision of my splendor. 22 Protect the old and the young within your walls.
Leviticus 26:12. And I will walk among you, and will be your God, and you shall be my people.
