October 9: Faith in Unseen Paths

  • Scriptural: Isaiah 43:19 “See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.”
  • Reflection: The promise of God’s presence includes the assurance that a path forward is possible. It doesn’t signify that the journey will be easy. Most of life’s paths involve work, hardship, and loss, along with learning, pleasure, and play. Metaphorically, our journeys often include winding detours, dead ends, confusing crossroads, and even paths into unmapped territory. Yet God remains with us.
When we look backward, back along the way we have traveled, even during challenging times, we can find God’s fingerprints on the assets and assistance we receive along the way. Whatever helps us endure and come out the other side, those are evidence of God at work in our lives. God supports our inner strength and resilience. God invites us to benefit from supportive relationships and resources that will allow us to overcome challenging situations and thrive in surprising circumstances. God wants more for us than mere survival. God desires happiness, balance, and sustainability for each of us, and for communities as a whole.
While we are partners and co-creators within the framework of our lives, thus taking accountability for our own wellbeing and capacity to be of service to others, we are also interconnected to a larger world. We are affected and empowered by its realities, too. We are not alone.
Be assured that your life is filled with guides, gifts, and opportunities. Together these blessings, along with your inner strength and connection to Godself, will help make a path possible.
  • Spiritual Practice: Take a walk and imagine the divine making a path in your life. Pray for eyes to perceive God’s workings.

Song:

“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.”― Fred Rogers
